I feel like I should make a little F.A.Q. I recently got more and more messages and notes with questions about everything and other stuff. And maybe it could interest some of you to see the questions and answers
So let's go.
1) In which field/business of art do you work mostly and like to work?
Currently I am working mostly in the feature film business/industry and I really enjoy it everyday to work on movies and create 3D matte paintings and concept art for shots and upcoming movies. I also wants to work for game cinematics, they are soooo cool and I wish I can work on some of them in the future! The would be awesome.
2) Where did you study to become a matte painter or concept artist?
In general I am a self taught artist in terms of concept art and matte painting. But in studied at the SAE Institute Leipzig, Germany where I learned the basics of using programs like Autodesk Maya or The Foundry Nuke. This helps me a lot to jump from a 2D Matte Painter into a 3D Matte painter/environment td/generalist. But I also use my 3D skills for concept art.
3) I saw you have a stock section on your portfolio website, can I download them and use it for own projects?
Yes you can, these are royalty free images which can be used for everything. For your own project, commercial projects or student projects. Feel free to use it for every project you want. I try to update them and add new packs from time to time, so make sure you visit my portfolio and the stock section 1-2 times a year or more often.
4) Can I use your finished personal concept art and matte paintings for my own projects or website, like my blog, community site, youtube page/movie or as cover for my new CD? I will put in a link to your portfolio as well as your name.
Normally not, especially not without asking. I am getting crazy when I see my art on a place where I've not putted in personally. I am a open minded guy and I like it to help other artists and ppl. So feel free to ask me if you can. When I like and see the potential in your project, what ever it is. I will try to help you. So please ask me before you want to use it. I gave the 'okay' to use my art for several pages and projects like blogs, youtube websites and so in the past, but only to ppl who ask me. Other one will getting serious problems with me!
5) What software do you use?
I like it to work on 3D environments, matte paintings and concept arts. I mostly use programs like Autodesk Maya, Nuke, Photoshop and smaller powerful programs like SpeedTree. For rendering I work with VRay and/or Arnold. But when I could choose, I would prefer Solidangle Arnold. It's an awesome renderer and I love it. For my concepts I also use Photoshop, Maya, zBrush and Keyshot! It always depends on the concept I want to do
6) You're sometimes so inactive on Deviantart, I know you're busy, but when can we see here your stuff you did for the projects?
Actually I will never ever UPLOADING any kind of professional feature film or game work/images on Deviantart or several other sites (I would maybe only link them like my reel), but never uploading.. It's just because of securing the copyright holders as best as I can which are mostly big studios like Warner Bros., Marvel or other major studios. But you will find my stuff on my own portfolio website only because I can post the stuff online under my own rules. Community sites sometimes giving other people the rights to use the stuff which artists posting. And this isn't what I want. So if you want to see something, feel free to visit my portfolio
If you have other questions, then feel free to ask me I will try to answer every question I will get.
